Pneumatic Artificial Muscle - Master’s thesis: medical equipment
October 2024 - June 2025
- Developed air-powered actuators for cardiac catheters that increase force output by 3.8× while fitting within the size constraints of blood vessels (no more than 5mm in diameter). This results in more stable positioning during heart procedures.
- Built and tested miniaturised artificial muscles inspired by biological muscle structure, evaluating how design parameters like braid angle and diameter affect force generation and contraction behaviour.
- Identified that real-world performance drops 40% due to friction and material stretch inside the 1+ meter catheter length.
- Created an approach to match actuator capabilities with surgical requirements, showing that these muscles can achieve the necessary 90° bending for transseptal puncture at realistic operating pressures.
- Simplified the manufacturing design by joining multiple muscle chambers into one assembly, reducing complexity and potential failure points while maintaining the force benefits of parallel actuation.
EcoQanat — Finalist Sustainable Hospitality Challenge

- Designed and built a lens focusing system for a thermal camera, featuring precise adjustment and absolute position control.

- Developed a 4-story rack with integrated water plumbing and light distribution as part of a course at University of Antwerp.
- Implemented automation using a Raspberry Pi, relay switches, and soil moisture sensors to control the system.
